I have been in the military for about forty years and the best Fourth of July I have EVER experienced was in a tiny town in the central valley of California called Atwater. This amazing small city of only 23,000 comes together for this day long event. Over 26,000 people visit the Atwater 4th of July festival every year. Starting bright and early at 8:00 am, be sure to get a seat on Broadway for the best small town parade you will ever see. After the parade, you travel about a block or two to a park located in the heart of the city with a wide array of booth vendors. From the typical arts and crafts to the amazing food Atwater showcases to the inflatable fun for kids and adults alike, it's like a mini theme park. The park closes down at 5:00 sharp and you hardly have time to hustle over to a local high school where they hold a two hour concert and blast a firework show that puts Disneyland's display to shame. I've been to the big town touristy places, where traffic will kill you if the hordes of tourists didn't; and the San Francisco firework display that on most years can't even be seen due to the fog. But in all my years, there is nothing like experiencing a Fourth of July Atwater's way.

Stevenson, WA in the Columbia River Gorge (45 mins from Portland, 15 mins from Hood River, 3 hours from Seattle) is having their first fireworks festival this year. There will be fun family tournaments all day long as well as live music and great food. Fireworks starts at 10pm and it is a great substitute from the cancelled Ft. Vancouver show that used to go on every year.
