Snow Kayaking — New Trend in Winter Sports?

Submitted by on January 19, 2010 – 9:19 am

snow kayakingWhen going fast on the snow using traditional things like skis, snowboards and snowmobiles gets old, apparently one takes water sports and applies them to frozen water. According to Randy Ericksen, one of the writers of the Black Hills Travel Blog, the latest trend is snow kayaking. A quick search of YouTube verified other enthusiasts in locales than South Dakota (don’t hate me, I had to check!) and the video of the 2008 World Snow Kayak Championships in Austria is pretty impressive.

The basic principle is the age-old hike up a hill carrying or pulling something to make you go faster down the hill. Try to avoid trees. When you have gotten bored, try to go faster. Build some jumps, crash a lot, and someone gets hurt but goes home happy that they jumped higher than someone else. The family version of snow kayaking should definitely be less accident prone, but it’s definitely something the kids will talk about for years to come.
