I have fond memories of going to Amish Country as a kid, it is a place that my mom has always loved. We usually went every few years have some pretzels and she would pick up a hand made quilt. Beautiful area.

I’ve always thought hydration important on road trips. One thing I discovered years ago was that kids can hold it much longer than one thinks if handled calmly. We’ve all been in the car just getting up to speed when someone says “I have to go!” I learned by kid two out of five to simply turn around and say “ok sweetheart, as soon as there’s a good place to stop, we will.” An hour and a half or two hours later, when even Dad wants to stop, we do. By then, the kid needing to pee has forgotten all about it and seems surprised to be stopping. By the time our 5th was big enough to wail about having to go, the older ones had caught onto this trick but kindly kept quiet.

We definitely used Milepost on our trip to Alaska a few years ago. The other one we used is older, but has terrific information for parents in it. It’s Going Places: Alaska and the Yukon for Families by Nancy Thalia Reynolds. I also love the Oh, Ranger booklets.

Thanks for the great post. We just went to Mammoth Cave over spring break but did not make it all the way to Bowling Green. Too bad- It looks like we missed out!

And just a short distance away is the Rudolph Cheese Factory. It is really a must see for only being a short 25ish minute drive. This stop is a MUST for anyone coming in from out of town.
